Foil 48 VeriSign Digital ID's or Certificates - II

From Basic Principles of Java and Internet Security CPS616 Web Technologies -- Spring 98. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 VeriSign software Digital IDs are used in conjunction with Microsoft Authenticode Technology (software validation) provide customers with the information and assurance they need when downloading software from the Internet.
2 Personal Digital IDs used by individuals when they exchange messages with other users or online services.
3 VeriSign offers four classes of personal Digital IDs. The classes are differentiated by their assurance level--the level of confidence that can be placed in the Digital ID based on knowledge of the process used to verify the owner's identity. The identification requirements are greater for higher numbered classes-
  • Class 1 Digital ID offers minimal assurance of the owner's identity,
  • while a Class 4 Digital ID offers assurance of not only the individual's identity, but also of that person's relationship to the specified company or organization.
