Foil 4 Classes of Grid Applications

From Comments on Metacomputing EuroTools Panel on Metacomputing -- September 3 1998. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 "Big Queue in the Sky" -- seamless (one at a time) access to multiple heterogeneous supercomputers
2 Collaborative access to specialized scientific instruments and visualization (a few linked systems)
3 "Parameter Studies" (pleasingly parallel -- no communication)
4 Application Integration (coarse grain components -- not particularly high performance)
5 PC, Workstation, Origin 2000/SP2 clusters (parallel computing built from distributed computing technology -- general application but network specialized) -- Grid in a Box
6 Distributed Modeling and Simulation (using geographically distributed computers to simulate geographically distributed systems)
7 TeleMedicine and Distance Education (high "performance" as large number of users)
