1 Web Technology is still uncertain and there may be major changes but "enough" capabilities are in place to build very general (~all) applications
  • MicroSoft v Sun / Netscape uncertainities
2 Rapidly evolving Standards and a mechanism to get rapid consensus
3 Fortran 77 -> Fortran90 --> HPF --> Fortran2000 (23 years)
4 VRML Idea (1994) --> VRML1 deployed (95) --> VRML2 deployed (early 97) (2.3 years)
  • VRML2 (3D datastructures and Java(Script) enabled methods) is more sophisticated than Fortran ?
  • Java development time was also fast compared to "traditional" standard adoption times
