Attend National Conferences in Web and (Computational Science) education
Note Web is a distributed "uncontrolled' environment and it is very important to listen to the "drumbeat of the Web" and take advantage of best new ideas wherever it comes from!
  • It is "the World's" Web and not "any one group's"
  • emphasis should be on flexibility and usability and not a seamless interface as rapid distributed evolution of the Web means we must be able to incorporate new technologies

Web technologies have potential for interactive rich environments which are clearly superior to existing video based conferencing and distance education

  • finally can realize promise of computer use in education!

Syracuse student (Kivanc Dincer) has thesis on Web based virtual programming laboratory which supports
  • MPI and HPF
  • Java for visualization of performance data (PABLO) and scientific visualization
  • VPL was used in my introductory computational science class CPS615 semester
  • It has been improved (security) and customized for the SP2 by Cornell and will be used as computational backend for their Web based "Virtual Workshop" on HPF next semester.

There are several well understood approaches to find out information about a given subject
  • Ask an expert (This becomes Collaborative Mentor model using Java Servers on the web)
  • Read a review article -- this highly refined high value information which is inevitably somewhat out of date
  • Full Web Search withsome sort of keywords --this is poorly refined with low "hit rate" but very up to date
  • Subscribe to mailing lists
  • Limited Web Search of restricted domain
NHSE is using and linking all these approaches to achieve both high value and timeliness.
  • Most effective approach is unclear and important in many areas (outside NHSE) but tradeoff in approaches will be different in different areas.
