I need to get an idea which pages are kosher to change. Ed had mentioned
last week that he was hoping to have the new pulsar web site up and running
when he visits with the NSF people, and I just don't think it's ready for
prime time. There are some subpages that still need work, and I don't just
want to go barrelling through them without asking permission first.

There is a problem in accessing log files from this machine, sunrise.
Sometimes it denys access, but not always.
I reported the problem to Roman previously, and I've been updating it
manually by checking everyday. Obviously, I didn't look at the stat page
yesterday. :)
I will talk to him again,
Jen

details of the our super demanding lives and return to nature. In every case
I have found the same welcoming feeling of self. In fact, I had to stop today

Dear Dr. W,
Sometimes AOL will not pull up certain websites outside their server, and the
URL to the upload site won't load.
I managed to find the site on my default browser (Netscape 3.0), but AOL's
browser said that it couldn't be found at all. I tried to upload the files
via Netscape they wouldn't transfer, and I'm trying to determine what to do.
I'm going to try to transfer the files again at a different time (sometimes
that helps); also, it might be possible to send the files as attachments via
e-mail; or, just hire a webhosting service if all else fails.
I'll keep trying, and I'll let you know what's happening.
Thanks,
Bill Kidwell

My session yesterday with Gary Strong et al. went well. Others present
included Larry Scadden (sr. program director for programs for persons with
disabilities) and John Cherniavsky (head of cross-disciplinary activities
in CISE), as well as Marv Goldberg (high energy physics; former chair of my
dept.; and personal friend) and one other program director from physics who
Marv grabbed on the way. (Late last week, Gary had e-mailed me that no one
had yet responded to his invitations to attend and that it might be just
him and me, which I responded would be fine; but we ended up with a decent
sized group).
No demo demons -- everything worked. I had well over an hour with them.
This all took place in a corner of Gary's office, as the nearby conference
room was occupied. So it was cozy. I showed my foils directly in the 3-ring
binder and people looked at my laptop display for NeatTools demos, which
took most of the time. I showed a couple of Tango screendump foils and
explained how that was a superior technology for KN. I also explained how
we were proposing to create a KN to research itelf, and how the mode of
operation and the content had to do with universal access. And I pressed
Gregg's important point that UA would be built insofar as possible into
the core software.
I had Larry participate actively in parts of the demo, and he and I
interacted quite well personally too. I talked up the KDI proposal during
the session. Gary said he had not seen the KDI proposals yet, but expected
to the next day (today) -- and he sepcifically said he would look at ours
today. Gary said that they received about 700 proposals (fewer than the
1126 letters of intent). Because they expect to make only 60-75 awards, it
will still be tough. Nevertheless I think I helped persuade them that we
have unique technologies (Tango, NeatTools, TNGs, etc.) and a great
collaboration -- and the key program directors already knew Geoffrey and
our collaborators well (Gregg, Cori, and Erik -- but not the Kuwait folks).
And now they know the PI too. Larry knew of Dave's work and reputation too.
I left Gary with several copies of a sheet I prepared with our main URLs,
proposal info, etc.
Later, in the physics division, I bumped into Rich Isaacson (relativity
director in physics) and showed him my foils; he liked what we were doing.
He opined that when congressmen ask what NSF is funding, our project would
make a nice example that they could appreciate. I wish he were in the loop
for our review. Rich also said that NCC got more than its share of KDI
proposals. He felt too that the deadline was too tight for many to form the
necessary collaborations and that's why so many dropped out after letter of
intent.
Anyway, y'all keep fingers crossed for next few months.
Ed

have you guys by any chance watched ABC newsline (nighline?)
last night around midnight?
there were showing for almost an hour a LIVE transmission
from MountEverest via satellite. MIT Media Lab guys
where with climbing team. they had video conferencing
of th quality ~10fps full screen with neglegible latency
and a host of gadgets monitoring climber's condition
(heart rate, pressue etc.), all controlled via satellite
and wearable computers. MIT guy (Hansley?) kept
talking about revolution in telemedicine this technology
will bring about.
it was a rather impressive demo.

Dr. Sanders:
When we spoke after your lecture at the University of Rochester last
month, I asked you about the compatibility of closed-captions with
bandwidth compression in telemedicine. You suggested that I contact you
by email and that you could put me in touch with someone who might be
able to answer technical questions about this. The current interest at
the U of R is keeping CME accessible to deaf or hard-of-hearing
healthcare professionals when we begin "telemedicine-based" CME.
Thank you.

* Send commands to LISTSERV using email The general procedure is: *
* *
* -create an email message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU *
* *
* -type each command on a separate line in the body of the mail *
* (where you would normally type your message). *
* You may send multiple commands in a single message *
* *
* -we recommend deleting any signatures (.sig) at the end of this *
* mail message to LISTSERV. LISTSERV tries to interpret your *
* signature as LISTSERV commands, and since it can't understand *
* your signature, will generate some error messages which may *
* be confusing. Correct commands will still be processed. *
* *
* -when you've entered all commands (you can send more than one at *
* a time), send the mail. *
* *
* An example (note: your mailer will automatically generate everything*
* except your commands to the list. You may not even see *

Hi,
The revised Display modules include LabelObj, IntegerObj, RealObj, and
DateObj now has the following new functions
1. Property canEdit: Set the edit mode. When it is true, user can type
directly without using the right click. If you are not in edit mode, just
use mouse click on the Label module, the cursor will show up. User is free
to type directly. If you are in edit mode, you can active the module with
mouse click, but you have to click on the empty space to eliminate the focus
first, before you can type.
2. Property raiseMode: CONCAVE, PLAIN, and CONVEX. Display the text in
different look and feel.
3. Property hAlignMode: AUTO, and FRACTION. When in AUTO mode, the module
will caculate the font size automatically, So text will always fit. But in
this mode, user can only use COURIER font. When in FRACTION mode, user can
choose fraction % (50% will have 25% space on the top and bottom of text),
alignMode (LEFT, CENTER, RIGHT), and font family.
4. nextFocus output (bottom) will send out a logical pulse when user press
the TAB key. This output combine with the editFocus input could let user
design a form with several input field and use Tab to switch between fields.
5. enterKey output (bottom) will send out a logical pulse when user press
the ENTER key.
escapeKey output (bottom) will send out a logical pulse when user press the
ESC key.
The NodeObj now have a new function. It will output a logical pulse when
there is an input event going through. This is very usefull when implement
the chat.ntl and chat2.ntl. Please reference the data.zip for detail.

who has access to the Pulsar account should send an email to
listserv@listserv.syr.edu with the body text
subscribe PulsarWeb My Fullname
Where My Fullname is your forst and last name.
Once the people are subscribed, all details regarding the web site should
be sent only to that listserv, pulsarweb@listserv.syr.edu. The
pulsar@listserv.syr.edu list should only be used for general announcements
rather than "Make sure you put alt tags on all your images" because there
are so many subscribers who have no idea what that means on this list ;).
I'm looking forward to lots of communication on the PulsarWeb list.
Once we're all on, we can get some good discussion out about all the
issues around having multiple web editors on one site and possibly come up
with a good system of construction.

Subject: IHN Traditional healers in Nepal
Greetings fellow IHN members,
I have recently returned from Nepal where I evaluated a project to train
traditional healers to provide eye care services and prevent blindness.
Traditional healers in Nepal are a very important health resource for
people in the rural areas. They outnumber trained doctors and nurses by
45 to 1 and provide a variety of ritual/spiritual and herbal treatments.
Therefore, for most Nepalis, the healers are the first point of contact
for any type of health care.
The Ministry of Health, NGOs, and international health agencies are
beginning to recognize the potential role that these healers can play in
providing primary health care services to rural communities. While
acknowledging the beneficial value of spiritual healing in people's
lives, the health agencies are making efforts to upgrade the skills of
healers to provide primary health services such as family planning,
nutrition, leprosy and TB control, health education, and prevention of
blindness.
This is not a move to train "mini-doctors" but to acknowledge the
important role of the traditional healer in the Nepali culture and to
upgrade their skills in preventing disease and alleviating illness.
Through these training programs healers are learning how to refer cases
they cannot treat to health posts and hospitals and that some, but not
all, of their herb treatments have been found to be harmful. As a
result, many have stopped using these harmful herbs.
Most of the healers in these programs are very enthusiastic about what
they are learning and want to know more about how to prevent diseases.
As a result of these initial successful training efforts, the government
and NGO's are moving to improve the collaboration and referrals between
the healers, community health workers, primary health care staff at the
health posts, and the medical staff in the hospitals.
I will be pleased to provide more information about the results of my
evaluation of the training program for healers to identify, treat and/or
refer patients with eye injuries/infections, cataracts, trachoma, and
glaucoma.
Regards,
Wilbur Hoff

I am thinking about the the Job after the graduation. I thought get a job

come to the U.S. and my graduation, I need to find a good pay job in order
to support the living and of course the evil medical insurance in U.S will
going to take a big portion of it. Other than working under NeatTool

this depends on the video encoder. standard
hardware based video encoders strip the vertical
blanking interval from thevideo signal before
compression, so this information is no longer
in encoded signal.
even if it were, it would be destroyed since
video compression is lossy.
however, it is possible to recover cc information
before the VGI lines are stripped, decode cc, and
put it into frame headers of encoded digital video.
we currently work on a custom video encoder
for WrightPat, so perhaps we could include this
feature if marketable

Hi!
The Davicon EMG machine is now working under NeatTools. Use Enabled to
activate the machine and use sample_clock to sample the current EMG value.
The module is designed to work with ALL Davicon products. Its property can
choose from Biofeedback System/3, Clinical Interface Pac, ... to Rehab
System/3. The IO port address could be changed in property also.
There are still a few required modules for SKI like date operators, string
operators, and some misc modules. I will start to layout the NTL and
hopefully can deliver the test version for SKI soon.

Tim,
The Davicon EMG machine module is completed. Everything goes fine. Except
there is a loose screw within the
machine. I could hear the sound but could not open the box to get it fixed.
Hopefully, it could last till my SKI
project complete.
Now, I am start to layout the relational data base portion for SKI. The
first thing I need to know is What kind of
Davicon you are currently used. Is it Neuromuscular System/3 ?
Also, I have some requirements want to varify:
1. Muscle DataBase: Name (String), Muscle_ID (String)
2. Physician DataBase: Last Name (String), First Name (String), UPIN (String
? Integer ?)
3. Therapist DataBase: Last Name (String), First Name (String), DISC
(String), Reg_No (String ? Integer ?)
4. Diagnosis DataBase: ??? (Please Show me the details)
5. Patient DataBase: Last Name (String), First Name (String), SSN (String),
DISC (String),
BirthDate (Date), Sex (String), Diag#1 (???), Diag#2 (???), ONSet
(Date), Ref Physician (String) UPIN (String)
Address Line1 (String), Address Line2 (String), Address City (String),
State (String), ZIP (String),
INS Class (String), First Visit (Date), D/C Date (Date).
6. Device DataBase: ???
7. SESSION HISTORY: ??? Is it EMG Setup ?
Please supply sample value inside each field, so I could start to layout the
related DataBase and Networks.

Dear Dr. W.,
Here is the first page (just an outline with each section as a link to another
page) of the project design.
CWMS has an option which will allow me to upload the entire site all at once,
but the email Send Attachment option will only allow one document at a time.
I'm sending you the main hompage.
I'm not really sure if I'll have to keep sending you a new file every time I
make one, or if (once we get a subdirectory established) I'll be able to
upload them all myself. I can work either way. Let me know which way we will
work it, and I'll adjust everything as needed.
When I write I like to type, revise, edit, embellish, rewrite and so on (so
the entire site would be continually changing), and it is really easy for me
to create a zillion pages to upload by simply clicking the File, then New
option. So, if I must send you each file one by one to upload, then this will
be too time consuming for you, and it will be better for me to reformat my
writing and techniques into one page only in the interest of time management
and FTP simplicity.
Just let me know, and I will adapt accordingly.
Thanks,
Bill Kidwell

Hi Dave,
I'm glad you are once again able to read your mail.
I have placed a file in your home directory called
'missing_mail'. If you login to your account
and issue the command:
more missing_mail
you will view a text file that contains the email you didn't
receive from Saturday on thru part of Monday. I wasn't sure
at what time your email kicked in again so I probably put
some mail in that you've already seen.
This wasn't the most elegant solution, but you should be able to
see what you missed.
Regards,
Kathy

whether they made significant science contribution

this is like columbia university and living schoolbook

we need to figure out if this is real before we move forward
indicators of reality are
who will be involved and what will they do
how much will it cost to get the project defined and all the players on board
where is the money gonna come from
how much money is there that we can count on...
i value my time i assume that you all value yours
who is the first target customer???
why do they think that this is valuable
after a little reality thearpy i will be able to be a little more focused

British Medical Journal - on-line
------------------------------------------
The British Medical Association and the BMJ Publishing Group have
announced that the full text of the British Medical Journal is now
available on-line on Internet at:
http://www.bmj.com/
The on-line journal contains the full content of each weekly issue of
the journal, including all figures and tables. In addition, the full
text is searchable by keyword, and the cited references include
hy-perlinks to MEDLINE and to the on-line full text of many other
fre-quently-cited journals.
On-line full-text content currently begins with the July 1997 issues,
and will expand with each week's new issue. In addition, several years'
archive is being added through the remainder of 1998, so that full-text
content from five or more years will be on-line at the end of 1998. All
on-line content is searchable.
The full-text articles on the site are free and available to all at this
time.
The site is being produced in conjunction with Stanford University's
HighWire Press, which also works with other medical/research jour-nals,
such as Pediatrics, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the American
Journal of Physiology, Science Magazine, the Blood, Gastro-enterology,
and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A list of 50
on-line journals and URLs is available at:

Here's a quick update on the general desire to have the home page updated.
Sorry I'm lagging, but I still don't think it's quite ready, and it's been
tough getting the free time.
I'm working on a better site map, and a feedback page, so we can have the
headers and footers work. For those who like it enough already, there's
certainly nothing wrong with changing the initial "gateway" link on
www.pulsar.org to point to www.pulsar.org/jeff/i3/. I haven't done this
myself, but if that's good enough for now, I'll do it.
I know everyone must be busy, because I haven't had much feedback on the
web site changes or the inquiry about videoconferencing. This is
definitely not a problem, just reiterating the inquiry. The webcam stuff
is cool. I actually saw some real people doing stuff in the kitchen! The
kitchen looks pretty tidy, too. :-)
I really like the improved sigkids page. Good job.

Hi,
Java Development Kit version 1.1.6 has been installed on
osprey. To use it, just add
/usr/npac/java/bin
to your PATH. (It is recommended that you *not* set CLASSPATH.)
To test your path, type
% java -version
at the UNIX command line.
Documentation and examples are at the usual place:
http://www.npac.syr.edu/projects/tutorials/Java/
Cheers,
Tom Scavo

Would u check out "http://www.pulsar.org/jen/work3.html"?
that is an partial update of work page of May
but that is not the one I want to show you, from that page, click on
"Here is a page of set of tools" , then you will get an extra window to
let u walk through communication tools list. In fact, I am also curious
if it is working at any web browsers..
and I also wrote a sort of technical report for the biochem database
, and it is available at the work page too. "technical report" link
what else... I tried several web servers for win 95 to be used at sigkids..
Some demos will need web servers and we don't want to connect to Npac
site from orlando.
I wrote SD plan. "http://s008.infomall.org/jen/SD/smart_5_21.htm"

Hi,
I go to a couple of different places to verify stuff like this:

This site is specific about the one you mention:

Dave, Matt and Peter,
We are now in the final stages of designing the space for the
Outreach/sigKIDS area in Hall C of the Orlando Convention Center. Our
designer is trying to design your spaces from the information you have
provided to date. It seems that your two projects are related.
Can you please fax detailed floor plans for your projects to our designer
(information below) by end of day Friday May 22. Without this information,
we are currently at something of an impasse for designing the space.
Please fax floor plans to:
Hope Hennessey-Gibbs

Thanks very much for your help with this.

There is some concern about receiving email with a
subject line as shown below.
"Win a Holiday Email Hoax"
This is NOT an actual virus.
Below is a copy of the actual text which was passed around.
VIRUS WARNING !!!!!!
If you receive an email titled "WIN A HOLIDAY" DO NOT open it.
It will erase everything on your hard drive. Forward this letter out to
as many people as you can. This is a new, very malicious virus and
not many people know about it. This information was announced
yesterday morning from Microsoft; please share it with everyone
that might access the internet. Once again, pass this along to
EVERYONE in your address book so that this may be stopped.
Also, do not open or even look at any mail that says "RETURNED
OR UNABLE TO DELIVER" This virus will attach itself to your
computer components and Render them useless. Immediately delete
any mail items that say this. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous
virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time. Please practice
cautionary measures and forward this to all your online friends ASAP.
It is good that you are cautions about virus possibilities!
Keep your system backed up and make sure you have the latest virus
checker on your system. NPAC has a subscription for our users. If
you are not sure, email me at njasper@npac.syr.edu

Dave,
I too am confused. Let's see if we can work together to straighten this
one out...
Chris hasn't been directly involved with the design or implementation of
the space in Hall C for some time now. The design you saw was a
preliminary one that has been substantially revised based on information
from each of the contributors and on budget constraints.
Our designer does have the original design though. She and I will talk
tomorrow to see what can be transferred from that design. The short notice
is clearly problematic. Please understand, however, that we didn't know
that you were basing your thoughts on Chris' original design, nor were we
aware that you had seen it.
In terms of the relationship with KidsCast, Peter Rosen refers to your
project throughout his proposal. Clearly another communication glitch.
We'll communicate direclty with him to see what he has in mind.
Either Hope Hennessey-Gibbs or I will get back to you after we've had a
chance to talk tomorrow.
Thanks for your assistance and patience.

I had a long chat with Marcie today at OnCenter.
Steve Karon is not available on June 1.
Can we meet with him and Jeff Rubenstein on June 2?
I also met Gary Lim there today. He is new managing director of the
entrepreneurship etc. program in Mgmt School (had been in Si Valley 20 yrs
where he had some startups himself). He too is available to meet with us
June 2 or other days that week.
You are here next on Tuesday according to Matt. Correct?

Dave,
Just tell me what needs to be done, or what I can do to help work
this out. Anything that is needed to make all this work.
Are we having fun yet??
matt
ps, Mike and Rahul will have neattools controlling the new motorized
monitor arm soon. The new arm will only handle a laptop, a monitor is too
heavy for the motors. But it is still really cool.

"Upon the stage of this natural area,I slowly make my way, feeling lines
radiate from the center of my being, from my belly, lighting pathways of
connection. And following the pathways, acknowledging the connections, I know
myself as a sensing being, a sentient being, who cannot deny the truth of what
she feels.
Just as love starts with self, so too trust. I'm beginning to understand that
as a child - with my 53 senses sensing like crazy to discover all I could
about this world I live in- I trusted those bigger and smarter than me when
they told stories that reduced my senses to five. (after all that's what good
little girls do, right?) Contact with nature is helping me to see that in
trusting others, I began to learn to distrust, mistrust myself -- it was them
or me, had to be, because my 53 senses were still sensing like crazy and
telling me this five-sensed world is a lesser world than the world really
is....and I couldn't live, didn't know how to live, in both.
I'm beginning to understand that my story of trust never did become clear and
precise, but rather developed into a distorted and tangled mess. AND I am
excitedly beginning to see that the full sensing part of me never really did
let go (or I never really did let go of it) --that it sat on my shoulder (like
Jiminy Cricket) and kept whispering not to trust those bigger and smarter
people and their limiting stories, while the five-senses stories, and the
people who told them, grew more and more powerful. And so I became confused,
and so clarity
eluded me....and I so came to trust no one, myself (and "Jiminy") included."
