STREPTOCOCCAL (STREP) THROAT - Health Teaching

Your child, ___________________, was seen in the nursing health office on __________ for a sore throat. A throat culture was performed. You will be notified of the culture results tomorrow. While we wait for the results of the culture, a two day supply of antibiotics has been prescribed for your child. The prescription will be renewed if the throat culture is positive. The following measures would help decrease the discomfort your child is experiencing:

Medication Administration

Erythromycin ____

It is important that your child receive all the prescribed medication, even if he/she feels better. The medication doses should be evenly spaced throughout the day. It is not necessary to awake the child during sleep for his/her medication. Refer to the specific medication teaching sheet for specific instructions regarding your child's medicine.

Attending School - Your child may return to school after receiving antibiotics for a 24 hour period. Your child's temperature must also be normal. Your child must also be feeling well enough to participate in school activities.

When to see the school nurse or physician

Your child should see the school nurse or your physician if any of the following last for more than 2 days after beginning medication
