``High Performance Java'' at NPAC

The acronym ``HPJava'' was coined in a draft white paper produced by members of the PCRC consortium earlier in 1996. At NPAC we have been experimenting with some of the ideas put forward there.

Emphasis to date has been on providing class libraries to facilitate communication and parallel computation within the framework of Java. We have prototyped a class library for Fortran-M-like channel communication, supporting a message-passinge style of programming, and presently we are experimenting with class library interfaces to directly support the data parallel programming style.

For the next stage of development we plan to produce a Java interface to a run-time library being developed in the PCRC project.
