CARRIER RECEIVES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FOR

THE WEATHERMAKER 38TXA AIR CONDITIONER

NASHVILLE, Nov. 25, 1996 -- The Tennessee Association of Business (TAB) recently awarded Carrier Corporation's Collierville, Tenn., plant the Excellence in Air Quality Award for manufacturing the new WeatherMaker 38TXA air conditioner. Carrier's WeatherMaker was recognized in the "large business" category for its high operating efficiency, compact size and use of a new chlorine-free refrigerant that complies with future phase-out legislation affecting residential air conditioners.

The TAB's Excellence in Air Quality Award recognizes corporations which design and use innovative technologies that reduce air pollution, preserve the atmosphere and go beyond mandatory environmental regulations.

"The TAB appreciates Carrier's step forward in the global effort to preserve the earth's atmosphere while offering a consumer-friendly air conditioner," said Josh Ellis, director of environmental affairs, TAB.

The WeatherMaker 38TXA is Carrier's highest-efficiency single-speed residential air conditioner, providing a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 13.0. The unit's refrigerant, R-410A, complies with residential refrigerant phase-out legislation, well ahead of the 2020 deadline. The refrigerant also enables Carrier to make the new unit as much as 27 percent smaller than comparable air conditioners.

"Carrier is proud to be honored by the TAB for the WeatherMaker 38TXA high-efficiency air conditioner, which we manufacture in Collierville," added Warner Anthamatten, Carrier's Collierville plant manager. "The new unit offers homeowners an energy-efficient cooling option that doesn't harm the environment."

Since the chlorine-free refrigerant does not impair the earth's protective ozone layer, the WeatherMaker also is the first residential air conditioner to be approved by Green Seal, a national, non-profit, environmental labeling organization.

In addition, the unit's high efficiency rating qualifies it for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Residential Program, which promotes the development and marketing of energy-efficient products that reduce energy consumption and pollution.

In 1993, the TAB awarded Carrier's Collierville plant the Air Quality Excellence and Environmental Excellence award for reducing its hazardous waste by 70 percent and its toxic air emissions by 90 percent.

Carrier Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems and equipment.
