OFFER INDUSTRY-LEADING FEATURES
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 28 -- Carrier's new line of EcologicTM chillers offer higher operating efficiencies, lower sound levels and smaller footprints than previous models. Incorporating twin screw compressors, Carrier's new 30HX water-cooled chillers and 30GX air-cooled chillers use non-ozone-depleting, chlorine-free HFC-134a refrigerant.
Carrier exhibited the new line of 75- to 280-ton water-cooled chillers and 80- to 400-ton air-cooled chillers here at the International Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigerating Exposition (Booth No. 3102).
The new Ecologic chillers demonstrate Carrier's logical approach to environmental responsibility. The Ecologic chillers meet four of the six environmental performance parameters Carrier established in 1993. The parameters are: refrigerant, efficiency, quiet operation and product size and material reduction.
"The Ecologic chillers are the first of this type designed from the ground up to use a non-ozone depleting chlorine-free refrigerant, which has an ASHRAE[1] safety classification rating of A-1," said Dan Williams, Carrier's McMinnville products business unit manager. But environmental responsibility and leadership mean more than the refrigerant selection. The new chillers provide this leadership without sacrificing efficiency. High efficiencies mean not only lower operating costs, but less production of greenhouse gases often associated with power generation.
The keys to the Ecologic chiller's efficiency are the geared twin screw compressor coupled with the flooded cooler. The combination minimizes pressure drops and enables the chillers to maintain and improve operating efficiencies.
"In a flooded cooler," Williams explained, "the water flows through tubes which are totally immersed in liquid refrigerant inside the heat exchanger. This configuration, common in centrifugal chillers, is extremely efficient and results in improved efficiencies and lower kilowatt-per-hour costs. It also helps reduce the chiller's size."
The twin screw compressors are more reliable and efficient than traditional screw compressors. Fully automatic microprocessor controls enhance performance and reliability by providing leaving water temperature control, even under variable flow conditions, and "flex control" to keep the unit on-line during extreme operating conditions.
Ecologic chillers are cable-ready for connection with the Carrier Comfort NetworkTM, an electronic communications system for integrated control and management of HVAC equipment in commercial buildings. Control features include a 365-day clock with holidays; set points, remote operation and on-board diagnostics. Building managers can further optimize system operation with the Flotronic System Manager, which provides simplified multi-chiller plant control.
Resource efficiency -- product size/material reduction -- is not only environmentally responsible, but offers pragmatic benefits as well, said Williams.
"A 175-ton water-cooled chiller fits though a three-foot doorway and is up to 30 percent lighter than similar units, making it ideal for replacement applications," he added. The 30GX air-cooled chiller is up to 50 percent smaller than the units it will replace, simplifying installation and providing more cooling in a given space -- often important in retrofit projects.
The Carrier 30GX chillers operate more quietly than comparative chillers. The 30GX unit features a new "aero-acoustic" fan design, which moves air with greater efficiency than the chillers it will replace. The result is lower levels, less vibration and a more compact design.
Carrier Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems and equipment. It is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, provider of a broad range of high-technology products and support services to the aerospace, building systems and automotive industries.
