A Roadmap to HPCC Applications

There are many ways to categorize the applications of HPCC technology. Some of these are:

A general categorization of applications

An industrial view of HPCC as a subset of information technology, which groups industrial uses of HPCC into:

• production of information (e.g. simulation);
• analysis of information (e.g. data mining);
• access of information (e.g. on-demand applications); and the
• integration of two or more of these areas.

Compute-intensive applications

A list of applications that will be able to exploit Petaflops computing has been generated by the PetaFLOPS Application working group from the Pasadena Workshop on Systems Software and Tools for High Performance Computing Environments that was held in Pasadena in April 1992. Further insights on how the HPCC community is responding to applications requirements arose from the 2nd Pasadena Workshop, held in January 1995.
