WWW Search Tools

To search this SyraCWIS server:

Please note that not all Syracuse University WWW material is on this server. For example, SU school and college information is distributed among ca. ten other servers. The catalogs are, however, on this server. Although incomplete, this search tool (Harvest) may be helpful to find SU-related information.
SU Library

To search the World Wide Web at SU and beyond:

(Comments on the following search tools have been drawn largely from Internet World (May, 1996), p. 42.)

ALTA VISTA
21 million web pages and Usenet articles. Simple default search. Complex search techniques deserve study.
EXCITE
1.5 million web pages. Includes "concept" search using a thesaurus. Link to city.net for community info.
LYCOS
Includes binary files, FTP archives, and Gopher menus. 11.5 million pages.
INFO SEEK
Claims to be the fastest and easiest. Includes newsgroups and FAQ's. Results are displayed in order of relevance. Free results limited to 100.
OPENTEXT
Pop-up menus for Boolean combinations or proximity of terms. Weighted searches. Covers every word of every page.
INKTOMI
Results include the number of times a word appears in a document, and a summary of the page.
HOTBOT
A new entrant still in beta-test mode. It is reputed to be the fastest of all but as a hot, new site, it is usually busy. Extensive coverage. "Powered by INKTOMI."
CYBERHOUND
In contrast to almost all other search engines, which look for a word match against many sites, Cyberhound is highly selective in its sites. It allows refinement of the search by types of documents, types of organizations, etc. Human intervention introduces some judgement, and produces classification structures.

WEBCRAWLER
Returns the title of the page. Basic search options and fairly quick searches.

See also the SDSC (San Diego Supercomputer Center) list of additional search engines, with explanations of their features.

Your browser may point to other search tools. These are usually indicated in the top of the screen. When using Netscape, for example, select "Net Search" or "Net Directory" from the toolbar near the top of your screen.
