Prof. Bo Peng
Bo Peng is an assistant professor in the Institute of Network Computing and Information
Systems at Peking University of China. He works in the Search Engine and Web Mining group,
and is mainly interested in the field of large-scale data processing at the intersection of
distributed system and web search. Currently he is visiting Indiana University to work with
Prof. Judy Qiu.

Langshi Chen
Langshi Chen is a postdoc in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University.
He obtained his Ph.D. in computer science from Lille University of Science and Technology in
France, where he worked on communication optimization and energy efficiency study of linear
solvers on hybrid clusters. His current direction of research within Judy Qiu's team
includes the intranode optimization of big data analysis and machine learning methods
implemented on manycore architectures, such as Intel's Xeon Phi.

Bingjing Zhang
Bingjing Zhang is a Computer Science Ph.D. student in the
School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University under Prof. Judy Qiu. His research
interest lies in
the distributed system design for applications in big data
analytics. Earlier efforts applied big data applications to the
Twister framework. One issue he studied was large-scale
image clustering, which tries to cluster image features from
large collections of social images. Through this process, he
discovered the challenge of handling high dimensional intermediate
data (model data) and subsequently the importance of
collective communication abstraction, which was missing in
Twister and many other big data processing engines. Currently,
his thesis research focuses on a collective communication
layer which provides model data abstraction and model data
synchronization operations for machine learning applications.
Rather than improving the Twister framework directly, he
built a Hadoop plug-in named Harp, which demonstrates the
applicability of HPC to enhance the performance of the current
Apache Big Data Stack (HPC-ABDS). He plans to finish his dissertation
by the end of 2016.

Meng Li
Meng Li is a first year Computer Science Ph.D. student in the School of informatics and
Computing at Indiana University learning under Prof. Judy Qiu. Currently he works on graph
applications on Harp.

Yiming Zou
Yiming Zou is a Computer Science Ph.D. student in the School of Informatics and Computing at
Indiana University. His advisor is Prof. Judy Qiu, and his research interests include
distributed system design and algorithms on big data. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from
Beihang University where he also worked on shortest path algorithms as an internship in the
algorithm group of ICT-CAS under Prof. Xiaoming Sun’s supervision.

Yining Wang
Yining is a first year undergraduate student in the School of Informatics and Computing at
Indiana University with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Financial Literacy.
She is currently undertaking an internship under Professor Qiu.

Announcements
Intel hosted a two-day training session at the Indiana University-Bloomington campus on
Sept. 2015. The course covered parallel computing using Intel Xeon processors. For more
