Abstract

The needs of avian influenza (AI) research increase due to the risk of human infection and high fatality rate. In Korea, two government research agencies are involved in managing AI virus information extracted from infected humans and animals. The National Institute of Health collects and maintains AI virus information from human infection. National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service does the same job from animal infection, collaborating with the research labs in universities. Therefore, research on AI needs to collect, integrate, share and analyze AI virus information from multiple distributed data sources. Since the data sources are heterogeneous, autonomously created and maintained by different institutions, it is very difficult for AI researchers to search their datasets from the sources.

In this paper, we propose a mediator-based data integration system, which integrates AI virus information sources of NIH, NVRQS, and university labs in Korea. Mediation approach to integrating the sources requires users to define the semantic mapping among them and thereby provide a uniform interface to them. Most AI researchers do not have enough knowledge on the sources to define the mapping. To alleviate their efforts, AVIS provides a visual administration tool to browse schemas or data descriptions of the data sources and easily define the semantic mapping for data integration. It also provides Web-based graphical interface to easily access and share data from multiple heterogeneous AI virus information sources.
