Abstract

In this paper, we will present a drug discovery application enabled by semantic web and web service technology. Recent trend from pharmaceutical research has demanded direct access to diverse information sources (for example from chemical, biomedical and clinical domains) and meaningful integration of such information. While Web Services provide a platform-independent interface to allow applications to interact with each other programmatically, Semantic Web is aiming at rendering web content with standard concepts to allow machine processing and intelligent reasoning. Here, we described our approach to support drug discovery applications using a semantic web service framework. More specifically, we built a carefully-scoped ontology for drug discovery domain and converted regular web services into semantic services with ontological annotations. Furthermore we developed a composition algorithm to automate workflow generation and carry out semantic level exploitation for drug discovery related tasks.
