Abstract

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) clouds can be used to extend site resources, such as a compute cluster or storage repository, to create elastic computing environments. However, at this time such extensions must be done manually by an administrator. This project will focus on tools and technologies to create elastic computing environments using IaaS clouds that adjust to changes in demand automatically and transparently.

Resource Requirements

Hardware Systems
  • foxtrot (IBM iDataPlex at UF)
  • hotel (IBM iDataPlex at U Chicago)
  • sierra (IBM iDataPlex at SDSC)

Use of FutureGrid

FutureGrid will help in the development of tools to create elastic computing environments using infrastructure clouds (e.g. Nimbus). This will primarily require the use of Nimbus clouds across the various resources (as a Nimbus user).

Scale of Use

In general it will only require periodic access to a handful of nodes. However, on occasion it may require access to hundred's of cores for a relatively short amount of time (a few hours at a time).
