Qiu Uses FutureGrid in the Classroom

This fall, Judy Qiu, associate director in the Community Grids Lab and faculty in the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing, is teaching a topics class for computer science graduate students using the FutureGrid architecture.

"This course offers programming models and tools of cloud computing to support data intensive science applications," said Qiu. "Students will get to know the latest research topics of cloud platforms and have the opportunity to understand some commercial cloud systems through projects using FutureGrid resources."

Qiu's class of 24 graduate students are part of a coordinated effort with two other universities, University of Florida and Louisiana State University. At each university, students will use the FutureGrid architecture to study the design behild cloud platforms.

Due to the range of technology in the FutureGrid architecture, students must work together to create the whole stack of a system.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for students to bring their specialties to the table and work as a team to put together the best project possible," said Qiu.

Currently only offered to graduate students at Indiana University, University of Florida and Louisiana State University, this curriculum could be used for undergraduates as well.

"The expansion of the program to include undergraduates would allow for more students to be exposed to new technologies and to build on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics experience that we want to encourage," said Qiu.
