Abstract

The Coastal-Ocean Simulation of the Gulf of Thailand project is a research activity carried out by National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Thailand. The project aims to gain the insightful understanding of the coastal-ocean process in the Gulf of Thailand and nearby areas. We employ numerical simulation based on the finite volume method as a key to discover the complex hydrodynamic interaction among wind, tide, shoreline and seafloor. With fine-scale geographic data and high performance computing facilities, we ascertain that our findings would realistically help solving many problems in coastal management such as storm surge warning, coastal erosion mitigation, and sedimentation control.

Intellectual Merit

The project aims to improve the in-depth knowledge of the coastal-ocean interaction, particularly, the hydrodynamic process of sea current pattern and its magnitude which is crucial for forecasting and planing.

Broader Impacts

The outcomes of this project give benefit to public community in terms of disaster awareness and preparedness, and also the sustainable coastal ecology management in the region.

Resource Requirements

Hardware System
  • I don't care (what I really need is a software environment and I don't care where it runs)

Use of FutureGrid

The project executes simulation processes on the FutureGrid resources to gain speedup.

Scale of Use

If possible, several VMs having high number of cores and 16GB memory for long (several weeks) execution; otherwise, a large number of VMs each having 16GB memory and high speed inter-connection network.
