Abstract

The goal of this project is to build tools and a framework for users to provision their own unique OS on Bare-metal machines in HPC Cluster, VMs on Cloud and users’ local machines. In our design, Cloud will be the middle place between Bare-metal Cluster machines and users' local machines, and allow users to send OS images(snapshots) back and forth, and then provision them on different type of machines.

Intellectual Merit

Users will be able to provision their own Operating System on variety of machines, in different location, with the same procedure. Also, it uses Cloud as the place for system backup, snapshotting and testing, which will be efficient for balancing the image sources of provisioning, and also efficient for recovery and redo.

Broader Impacts

This framework can be a great bridge for users to send and provision their OS images across Local, Cloud and HPC so that they can test and evaluate their system in variety of computing resources.

Resource Requirements

Hardware Systems
  • india (IBM iDataPlex at IU)
  • sierra (IBM iDataPlex at SDSC)

Use of FutureGrid

FutureGrid resources will be used for developing the framework.

Scale of Use

We use one or two nodes of HPC for a week. Then, if we start providing the service for FutureGrid users, We would like to increase the number of nodes.
