Abstract

NRAO and UVa are investigating the use of XSEDE facilities to support calibration, flagging and imaging of Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) data using the Common Astronomy Software Application (CASA) and NRAO developed pipeline processing.
Results of the investigation will inform the necessary modifications to CASA parallel framework and pipeline environment to enable efficient execution on XSEDE systems.

Intellectual Merit

Successful completion of the proposed test will inform modifications to CASA, NRAO's primary imaging package, enabling efficient execution on XSEDE systems.

Broader Impacts

Access to XSEDE systems for imaging would assist the 1000+ PIs using NRAO instruments in achieving their science goals and assist the NRAO in increasing its user base within the broader astronomical community.

Resource Requirements

Hardware Systems
  • alamo (Dell optiplex at TACC)
  • hotel (IBM iDataPlex at U Chicago)
  • india (IBM iDataPlex at IU)
  • sierra (IBM iDataPlex at SDSC)
  • bravo (large memory machine at IU)
  • delta (GPU Cloud)

Use of FutureGrid

We will be running CASA jobs on FG resources.

Scale of Use

We will be running these jobs for upto 3-4 months, may be more as the need arises. We will need extra storage for these jobs as jobs will be using input files ranging from 10-100GBs and generating output possibly in that range. We would like our storage quota to be increased to accommodate these jobs.
