Foil 35 Shared Address Space Model

From Master Foilset for HPC Achitecture Overview CPS615 Introduction to Computational Science -- Fall Semester 1998. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 Process: virtual address space plus one or more threads of control
2 Portions of address spaces of processes are shared
3 Writes to shared address visible to other threads (in other processes too)
4 Natural extension of uniprocessor's model:
  • conventional memory operations for communication;
  • special atomic operations for synchronization
5 OS uses shared memory to coordinate processes
